 INTRODUCTION FOR ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE (EM) GROUP

 

  Founded in 2005, the EM group is consistently ranked one of the most prestigious EM institutions in Taiwan. The version of EM graduate institute is to offer a comprehensive EM engineering curriculum for fostering influential leaders and technically competent engineers in the EM regimes. It also provides a dedicated learning environment and well-equipped facilities to empower the graduate students to explore their interests and develop their EM scholarship. A unique research topic of NCU EM group is to develop the radiometer RF module for the payload of the micro satellite. The major targets are to design a miniature and high integration radiometer module that will achieve the goals of light weight and small size for the microsatellite. Moreover, it is to develop and to verify the soil moisture retrieval algorithms for the radiometer system to be built by our science team. Since there are no related field campaigns in Taiwan, we will collect field data from overseas experiments at the early stage to assist the development of the retrieval algorithm. Upon completion of the microwave/millimeter-wave radiometer, the developed algorithms may be tested against our own data and improved for practical use. Meanwhile, EM group will be linked up the space, remote sensing and optical science groups in National Central University. The researches of radar, remote sensing, radiometer, and telescope will be carried out with National Science Council and Academia Sinica. Also, the excellent research will be achieved in the next decade. Another unique research is about ultrahigh-speed devices and mm-wave circuit, for example, 24-, 77-, and 94-GHz automobile radar systems using 0.15-μm GaAs enhancement/depletion-mode HEMT, 2-μm HBT, SiGe, and CMOS technologies will be developed. The research covers the device modeling of the single/dual gate device, the high performance front-end integrated circuits, key passive components, the related necessary techniques for analysis and measurement, and the innovative baseband signal process for the automobile radar. Furthermore, the related researches will be integrated to promote the ability for developing the key components of automobile radar system in Taiwan.

  Currently, EM group consists of 6 faculty members with research interests covering RF/microwave/ millimeter-wave circuits and systems, monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs), high-speed mixed-signal integrated circuits, antenna theory and design, passive components and package technology, radio wave propagation and remote sensing, ferroic materials for microwave applications, and terahertz component for radiometer. More than 1 doctoral and 18 Master students graduate ANNUALLY from NCU EM group and have got successful career in industry.
