INTRODUCTION FOR ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE (EM) GROUP

The Electromagnetic Integrated Circuits (EMIC) research group at National Chung-Cheng University currently consists of five faculty members, including Prof. Sheng-Fuh Chang (joined in 1994) , Prof. Ching-Wen Tang (joined in 2003), Prof. Chia-Chan Chang (joined in 2004), Prof. Janne-Wha Wu (joined in 2005), and Prof. Zuo-Min Tsai (joined in 2011), with typical annual intake of 30 graduate students. In addition, there are typically between 8-16 PhD students in the group. All the faulty members are with Department of Electrical Engineering and Department of Communications Engineering.

The faculty members of the group are engaged in both fundamental and applied researches in the frequency range from approximately 400 MHz to greater than 100 GHz, leading to important publications in top international journals and conference proceedings. Within the past five years (2007-2011), more than 45 journal papers and 40 international conference papers have been published by the group, along with 43 USA and Taiwan patterns have been approved. Several books have been authored and co-authored by the faculty from the group. A number of international and national awards/fellowships have been conferred on several members. The faculties actively served as IEEE technical officers (Prof. SF Chang as the chair of MTT Tainan Chapter), the editorial boards of international journals (Prof. Tang as associated editor of T-MTT), and programme committees of international conferences (APMC, RWS, IASTED, etc.). Besides research, the faculties are dedicated to education. Two faculties have received Outstanding Teaching Awards from National Chung-Cheng University (five recipients annually). Long-term participation in course development project for engineering students is another example. The developed reconfigurable RF kits has been selected as outstanding lecture material by Ministry of Education, Taiwan in 2011.

Research and development activities of the group are centered on three well-equipped laboratories, which cover a diverse range of topics of RF, Microwave, Millimeter-wave devices and systems, including active and passive ICs and circuits design (up to 100 GHz), LTCC passive components and modules, chip antennas in CMOS/IPD and measurement technique, phased array antennas, array beamforming techniques, wireless vital detection radar, wireless 2-D/3-D indoor positioning system, and CMOS-MEMS reconfigurable circuits. The curriculum and research training are well balanced with theories and applications so that the students can be equipped for industrial needs by graduation. Our students achieve awards in many international and domestic competitions. The mentionable records include winning the IMS student design competitions for last four years in a row, being rewarded outstanding/honorable mentioned chip designs of RF/MEMS ICs by National Chip Implementation Center (CIC) for last five consecutive years, winning the First Prize and Best Creativity Award (design group) of 10th MXIC Golden Silicon Awards in 2010, etc.
