INTRODUCTION FOR ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE (EM) GROUP

The electromagnetic (EM) research group in the Communication Research Center (CRC), Yuan Ze University originated from the microwave group in the Department of Communications Engineering with an integration of related faculties in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Yuan Ze University and in the Department of Communications Engineering, Oriental Institute of Technologies. It currently consists of 13 faculties, a postdoctoral researcher and a technician, among which three holding the Fellow grade memberships of IEEE (also dual fellow memberships from SPIE and IET), which is considered among the top research groups in Taiwan and also in the world.

The CRC EM group has built up strong research facilities in terms of EM numerical simulation and experimental measurement capabilities ranging from the frequency bands below 40GHz for the industrial applications, the most complete in Taiwan. The research scopes focus on the design, implementation and realization of high-gain and intelligent antenna system as well as the associated simulation and measurement tools, RF modules, RFIC, and digital signal processing, which can be applied for a smart operation in the satellite communications, mobile communications and their extensions. Potential antenna candidates include, but are not limited to, phased array antennas, reflectarray antennas and reflector antennas with their capability extension using frequency selective surfaces (FSS) and metamaterials. To achieve the design functionality, the research subjects vary widely from the EM theoretic analysis in Timeand Frequency- Domain in terms of geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD), numerical techniques for fast simulation, empirical modeling for device measurement, RFIC packaging and wireless sensor networks. The resulted problems including EMC/EMI, biomedical effects, wireless power transform and integration interfaces between simulation and measurement are also under interest of deep investigation by the faculties.

The members of CRC EM group have been widely recognized nationally for their distinguished performances and contributions to the nation’s key technologies. Important ones include the Distinguished Industry-academia Cooperation Award from the Ministry of Education, Distinguished University Contribution to the Industrial Economics and National Industrial Innovation Award from Ministry of Economic Affairs, and Outstanding Industry-academic Cooperation Award from the Chinese Institute of Engineers. The research outcomes resulted from the collaboration with an industry had been elected as one of the best made products in Taiwan. This research group has been identified by Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technologies as the key collaborator for the development of antenna technologies. It has built up strong international cooperations. Important ones are with Ohio State University, University of Hawaii and Penn Sate University in USA, University of Pisa in Italy, Middle East University in Turkey, and several key universities in Mainland China.

The YZU CRC EM group aims to develop the state-of-the-art RF and antenna technologies for the next generation of wireless communications. It has successfully established an industrial cluster based on the core technologies of high-gain, smart antenna system. This group continues to grow and create impacts to the world’s developments of EM technologies.
