INTRODUCTION FOR ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE (EM) GROUP  

  Established right after World War II, the EM Group of NTU has developed into a distinctive university center affiliated with the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Graduate Institute of Communication Engineering. Originally named the Radio Wave Research Laboratory and actively involved in researches on ionosphere wave propagation, the EM group was later well recognized for its pioneering researches on variational electromagnetics anchored by Prof. C.-H. Chen in 1980's, which later laid the cornerstone of some today's commercial softwares, especially HFSS. Then conducted in 1990’s was a series of defenserelated researches on EM imaging technology for radar applications. Recently, as driven by the successful ICT industry in Taiwan, the civil applications attract more interests.

  The vision of EM Group is to provide the state-of-the-art research for funded projects and the superior education for graduate and undergraduate students in EM theory and applications. Pursuing the research of excellence, the group was ranked #1 in the number of published papers in IEEE Trans. Microwave Theory Tech. among the universities worldwide since 2006 and in IEEE Microwave Wireless Comp. Lett. since 2007 (see the figure below). For the educational impact, the graduated alumni have become the most wanted innovative manpower of design and development among Taiwan's top telecommunication industry, EM Group maintains world-class experimental facilities that have been upgraded over the years through the project funding supported by the government and industry. Currently, it consists of 16 faculty members (3 IEEE Fellows) with research interests covering microwave and millimeter-wave integrated circuits, microwave passive components, signal/power integrity, system on package and EMC, antenna engineering, RF channel modeling, microwave imaging and measurements, and design and modeling of optical waveguide. Each year, more than 10 doctoral and 40 master students graduate from our group and continue very successful career in industry, academia, and government.
